God is for Suckers!
THIS BLOG IS NO LONGER ACTIVE. We've retired this blog, but the GifS gang is now active at Atheist Oasis (atheistoasis.wordpress.com). Visit us there!
We have a new website with a new name!
After discussing the idea of a new website off and on for a couple of years now, we finally decided amongst ourselves that it was time to retire the old God is for Suckers! and start anew with a new name. The name of the new website is Atheist Oasis – A Rational Refuge. [...]
Muslims want to add holidays on NY school calendar
The Muslim religion seems to be in the news a lot these days. Now, again in New York City, “Muslim parents, students and civic groups are campaigning to add two of their religious holidays to the New York City public school calendar, pinning their hopes on state lawmakers after failing to win over Mayor [...]
Christianity’s message to its children
Chilling video from the Thinking Atheist. What children are being taught in the name of God. And it is all true and not an exaggeration. Those of us who were born into and raised in Christian homes were all told these things and had them drilled into us again and again, week after week in [...]
Banning The Burka – Big Brother Micromanaging, Or A Common Sense Precaution?
I’ve made it abundantly clear in the past that of the Big Three of Abraham, Islam is perhaps the most backwards and barbaric of them. True, there was once upon a time when the Muslims had a ‘Golden Age’ of sorts, where the Middle East was an oasis of culture in the Middle Ages, but [...]
FYI – “Stealth evanglism” in public schools
“Stealth evangelizing”, (fundamentalist proselytizing) groups are forming all around the country intending to sneak “under the radar” at public school events with the intention of evangelizing to the children once they get in the door.

Tea party scare tactics
While driving back home from Key West, amongst the numerous anti-abortion billboards, and the “you are going to Hell if you don’t love Jesus” billboards, and the sex toys and nude-girls-at-next-stop billboards, my husband and I also saw a few anti-Obama and anti-liberal billboards. I should have had my camera ready to snap a [...]
Welcome To America, Where The Woo Runs Deep…Even Unto The Military
It is no secret to the informed, that even the US Armed Forces, those stoic warriors of the crew cut, polished shoes and bounce-a-quarter-off-the-made-bed are privy to superstition just as much as the rest of the populace.
Recently, I watched the very funny The Men Who Stare At Goats. The movie touts itself as being [...]

Forum Discussion: Terrible Christian Songs / Hymns
Music is supposed to be good, right? Obviously not all music is good, but the point of music is that it's supposed to be good, even if the creator failed. Sometimes, though, one gets the impression that this wasn't one of the goals of some religious music or hymns. Some of it appears to have been created with other goals in mind -- indoctrination, propaganda, etc. -- without any consideration for the music or lyrics being any good in any musical or poetic sense.

The link in some people's minds between their religion and their nation is so strong that they simply can't imagine one without the other -- they can't imagine being a Christian without also being an American (at heart) or an American without being a Christian. Or, at a bare minimum, some sort of religious theist.
Especially disturbing about this is that the same people will typically list "freedom" as an important American value but they don't seem to recognize that demanding theism in order to be an American contradicts the principle of freedom. Then again, maybe they do recognize the contradiction but don't care because they don't really care about freedom -- imposing religion on others is their real interest.

Believers frequently insist that religion generally, and perhaps their religion in particular, are at least helpful for moral behavior and may even be necessary for moral behavior. Not only is this not true, but it's not that hard to come up with situations where religion can get in the way of morality -- at least where "morality" involves helping other human beings get by. Unfortunately, some religious believers see "morality" as nothing more than "do what God orders regardless of the harm or suffering it causes".

When Tony Blair came to Georgetown University to speak at a conference of Muslim and Christian scholars, he seems to have thought that the best way for Christians and Muslims to get past their differences is to find a common enemy to hate jointly. So if they can just find some group they both despise, then they can unite in hatred of this enemy and stop attacking each other. And which enemy did Tony Blair offer them? Secularists.

If you spend much time discussing religion, politics, and philosophy, you'll quickly find that if you want to get anywhere you'll need to acquire some skill when it comes to analyzing, understanding, and refuting basic arguments -- and that's all before you learn how to properly construct your own. But just where do you go to get such skills?

One of the basic counter-terrorism tools seems to be assassinating terrorist leaders. It's not hard to understand why: cut off the head and the body will at least be weakened, if not wither and die. Right? Well, those assumptions don't always hold true and it's not hard to see why, at least when it comes to religious terrorism and religiously-motivated terrorist groups.
After all, when people believe that their god is directing the action, the martyrdom of a leader or two isn't going to slow them down much. Assassinating leaders doesn't even always work on more secular terrorist groups, depending on factors like size and age. That's why it's important to recognize and accept that some terrorist violence really is religious motivated -- not simply motivated by politics with a religious overlay -- and deal with it accordingly.

Regardless of their infantile notion of Christianity or theism, they fail to realize that the jokes in their signitures... could be regarded as prejudice, whether indirect or direct. Also, many of the agnostic/atheists seemingly like to represent their feelings in their context; e.g. comparing God to something fantastical or miraculous, like santa claus. Many analogies and feelings like these that are expressed, could be interpreted as unacceptable and obviously bigoted from a theistic standpoint....

Re: Arguments Creationists shouldn't use: AiG
Welcome Cristine27!
Yes, indeed, and faulty thinking can easily lead to faulty decisions and counterproductive behaviour. I wish our schools would teach better thinking skills, we'd be much better off as a nation and as people.
Re: Arguments Creationists shouldn't use: AiG
I have follow your article entitled "Arguments we think creationists should not use". Your article are true, the final reason for avoiding flawed arguments is that it leads to faulty thinking.
Re: Realm Argument.
I have read an article entitled "Does God Exist?". It is really hard to have an argument about it, right? But if you really believe in Him, you don't have to doubt if God does exist. For me, there is no shortage of good arguments for God's existence.
